A by-product of growth is waste; residential wastewater comes from ordinary people just living their lives with what many around the world would consider luxury living to include bathing, toilets, dishwashing, laundry, etc. are all contributors to wastewater. For commercial wastewater, the contributors are a long list due to the fact that any restaurant, beauty salon, manufacturer, auto repairs, etc., all contribute in some way wastewater.

As cities and industries grow, wastewater is produced, and each is accountable for providing a safe, environmentally friendly way to store, process, and reuse wastewater. Wastewater is broken into 2 different categories depending on its source, 1- Gray water which is what goes down the drain in showers, bathtubs, dishwashers and disposals, washing machines with soap residue and the kitchen sink, the second category is black water which is primarily from toilets and managed differently.
